Drive Snapshot features

Drive Snapshot creates an exact image of the hard disk for backup, restore and disaster recovery – while Windows is running, without a restart.

Backup

Exact image of the hard disk – while Windows is running, without a restart.

  • During operation: once the backup has started, you continue working as usual; the image shows the data as of the start time.
  • Differential images: based on the hash file of a full backup.
  • Split large images: into partial files of configurable size.
  • Compression: approx. 50%.
  • Encryption: protect images with a password.
  • Network drive as target: e.g. \\Server\Backups; the source is local hard disks.

Recovery

Restore the system partition on restart, other partitions directly under Windows.

  • System partition: when the computer restarts, from DOS or from a maintenance installation – not while Windows is running.
  • Other partitions: restore directly under Windows.
  • Emergency boot media: DOS/FreeDOS, optionally with NTFS and network access.
  • Windows PE/BartPE: Drive Snapshot also runs in these environments.

Image access

Mount, browse and verify images.

  • Image as virtual drive: mount it and browse it in Windows Explorer.
  • .SNA files: Drive Snapshot as the default viewer.
  • Verify a backup: check a mounted image by comparing files (e.g. with WINDIFF) or use the consistency test -T.

Automation

Control and automate backups from the command line.

Examples from the command line documentation:

Command line (source: drivesnapshot.de, icommandline.htm)
SNAPSHOT C: X:\C-Drive.sna
SNAPSHOT C:+D:+E: \\Server\Backups\$disk-Drive.sna
SNAPSHOT X:\D-Drive.sna D:
SNAPSHOT X:\C-Drive.sna Z: -V
--exclude:\Temp,\Windows\Memory.dmp,\Windows\Minidump\*
  • -L1490 maximum image size
  • -R empty the recycle bin before the backup
  • -T consistency test
  • -PW=password encryption
